How did I start teaching?
The story of how I started teaching is one of happenstance. When I graduated from college in 2020, I had tutored a bit in college and had an English degree, and there was a big need for personal tutors at the time, so that’s how I fell into it. But my very first clients, a group of four elementary aged students who I began to work with in the fall of 2020, the year COVID shut the schools down, taught me that teaching was a part of me. I helped them through their math classes and then, with the 30 extra minutes that we had after math, we read the Percy Jackson series and I held mini-lessons on the elements of the mythology within it that I hand-drew in my sketch pad. When I saw the joy my lessons brought to these kids, I knew that they had given me something priceless—fulfillment. I’ve been chasing that feeling ever since, and what a joyful journey it’s been!
Why do I tutor?
I tutor because I know that I can make a difference for my students. I love the public school system deeply and all that it offers for our students, and I recognize that there are limits to what teachers can do for their ever-increasing class sizes. As a tutor, I get to make a connection with each of my students, understand their natural learning styles, and work from there to help them devise strategies to find success in the English classroom.
One of my favorite parts of teaching is teachers! Many of the professional relationships that I built over the years have blossomed into beautiful friendships, because teachers are some of the kindest, most open people I’ve ever had the privilege to know. I love my teacher friends, who I’ll always think of as real life superheroes!
